The Story of Papa Dog

The story of Papa Dog was told to me by one of my favourite humans – Ronica Kumar. She is such a kind and caring soul and feeds, looks after the health needs and rescues so many dogs and other animals. I hope she will share more stories with us in the days ahead.

The Story of Papa Dog

Hi, I’m Ronica Kumar, and I wanted to share a sweet story about a street dog I fondly called Papa Dog. I used to see him now and then on my way to Karkhana, Secunderabad. I’d stop, feed him, and he’d happily eat. Over time, he began to recognize me—my voice, even my car—and he’d trot along with me for a bit until we reached a corner where I’d usually give him food.

One day, I noticed something unusual—his right eye looked slightly white, almost cloudy. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen this kind of issue in a street dog, so I knew it needed attention. I consulted a vet who confirmed that Papa Dog’s eye definitely needed to be checked.

I decided I would get him treated, but it wasn’t as simple as I’d hoped. Some days I couldn’t find Papa Dog. Other times, animal catchers weren’t available. After several attempts, I finally met a GHMC catcher who helped me gently catch him and take him to the vet.

The diagnosis wasn’t great—his eye required immediate surgery. The vet recommended an enucleation, a procedure to remove the eye. He gave me the estimate, and without hesitation, I began to raise funds for the surgery.

The Magic!

This is where the magic happened. I reached out to my caregivers group—my dear friends who, without a second thought, started contributing whatever they could. Bit by bit, we raised the full amount. With their love, generosity, and warm wishes, Papa Dog had his surgery.

The vet assured me that the procedure went well and that Papa Dog was healing beautifully. After a week of antibiotics and post-care, he was ready to go back to his home—the streets he knows so well.

It felt incredible to be part of his healing journey. I’m so grateful to every single person who helped make this happen—friends, caregivers, the kind vet, and the catcher who helped us. Thanks to all of them, Papa Dog is back where he belongs, happy and safe.

Life on the streets is pretty tough for them. But if each of us can do just a little bit—whenever and wherever possible—it can make a big difference in their lives.

They still have faith in humanity. They believe someone out there is looking out for them—feeding them, caring for them. It’s a small kind of harmony we can create in their world.

And honestly, it feels good both ways. It feels good to be there for them. And I’m sure they feel good knowing that we are.
